When Replacement Makes Sense
- The drain field stays saturated even after pumping and repairs
- Sewage surfaces in the yard again and again
- A steel or deteriorated concrete tank is failing
- An inspection at sale finds the system can't be repaired
- New construction, an addition or a bedroom count change that the existing system wasn't sized for
Not every problem needs a new system. Start with a diagnosis. Our septic repair and drain field page covers fixes such as baffles, pumps and lines.
How Installation Works in Bucks County
- Site evaluation and soil testing. Soil probes and percolation testing show what kind of system the lot can support.
- System design. A designer prepares plans for the right system type.
- Permit. The Bucks County Health Department reviews and permits on-lot sewage systems (215-345-3318). Work can't start without the permit.
- Installation and inspection. The installer builds the system to the plan, and the work is inspected before it's covered.
- Final approval. In townships like Plumstead and Hilltown, the pumping cycle starts from the date the system is approved, so keep that paperwork.
System Types You May Hear About
- Conventional in-ground beds or trenches where soil depth allows
- Elevated sand mounds, common where soils are shallow or seasonally wet
- Systems with dosing tanks and pumps that send effluent to the absorption area
- Alternate or experimental systems where standard designs won't fit
Your designer recommends the type. Mounds and pumped systems have alarms and pumps that need regular checks.
Planning Ahead
- Timing. Testing, design and permits take time, so start early, especially if a sale is pending.
- Access. Equipment needs a clear path to the work area. Mention fences, septic lids or tight driveways on the form.
- Landscaping. Plan to restore the lawn over the new field, and keep trees and paving off it.
- Township rules. After installation, follow your township's pumping program. See septic pumping.
Installation FAQ
Can I replace only the tank? Sometimes. If the drain field is healthy, a tank replacement may be enough. A pro will check both.
Do I need a permit to replace a system? Yes. Installations and most repairs need a Bucks County Health Department permit.
What affects the cost? Lot conditions, system type, access and permit requirements. We don't post prices. Our Septic Guide explains the factors.
